The Sugarcanes , the brainchild of the Wizard of College Baseball, Coach Ron Fraser, worked their first game for the Miami Baseball program, a love affair that is currently in its 47th season as a Hurricanes fan favorite ! The Canes defeated the Florida Gators 8-7 in 12 innings, but the group of coeds who picked up the bats, chased foul balls, and added a new touch the to ballpark were the Big Hit ! Coach Fraser had tapped Annette Ficucello as the first captain of the Sugarcanes, had a uniform designed and trained the girls on how to help out during the game. Fans loved the idea...and the uniforms...and one of College Baseball's greatest promotions, the FIRST college batgirl organization, was here to stay !
